My Virtual Classroom Session 5: Developing Oral Competency Online

Creating an engaging learning environment in our constantly evolving social reality is both desirable and highly achievable. Second language teachers are bursting with creativity and perseverance but need support to reduce anxiety while continuing to teach in a positive and realistic way. The goal is to create a “win-win” scenario for both teachers and learners. Building and maintaining oral language skills is a significant challenge for second language teachers under “normal” conditions. With COVID-19, the “new normal” requires a modern educational shift that has abruptly shaken up classrooms around the world, exponentially stressing teachers at all levels. How do we integrate this virtual world into our teaching? How do we develop hybrid models in our pedagogy? This workshop will guide teachers towards a virtual, hybrid model of education. This shift towards planning oral skills first, geared towards authentic situations, is a major challenge in both synchronous and asynchronous environments. We will discuss a model — online, hybrid, synchronous and asynchronous — that will allow our learners to grow and progress with confidence.
