FSL Fundamentals

Overview: About the Course

Hello and welcome to the CASLT CoLab modules! The goal of this module is to become more familiar with assessing work produced in an additional language (L+). I will guide you in the analysis of student work examples and the application of relevant theory. The examples shown here come from a French as a Second Language (FSL) unit presented in the Designing an Instructional Sequence module. If you have not done so already, check out that module before starting this one (this is not a requirement, only a recommendation).

Throughout the module, you will find resources and information to help you be successful in your assessment practices. In addition to content, you will also have the chance to participate in interactive and collaborative activities with other members so that you can view their assessment practices and receive feedback on your own. If any of their posts or comments are particularly insightful or relevant to your own professional practice, feel free to reach out to them on the CASLT CoLab Profile page! This course is delivered asynchronously, so you can stop and pick up where you left off at any time.

Learning Goals

At the end of this course, you will be able to

  • Differentiate formative and summative speaking assessments
  • Select and use appropriate Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) descriptors
  • Apply proficiency benchmarks while analyzing student production

If you have not done so already, I encourage you to explore the different modules and functionalities of our virtual course, as well as the CASLT CoLab pages.

I’m excited to learn with you!
